New Year’s Resolution: Get Healthy & Lose Weight

This year however I have given in. Even though I lug a 25 lb toddler and 10lb purse up and down three flights of stairs everyday it seems as though that is not enough. I have found myself at an even heftier weight than ever before, even as much as when I was pregnant. The weight shall not be mentioned in this blog today but I will say that My BMI is 48.8 which is more than morbidly obese.
What have I done to make myself this unhealthy?
NOTHING!
No, I am not saying this unhealthy body that I am in is not my fault. I am not misguidedly blaming others for my situation. I am honestly admitting that I have done absolutely NOTHING to be healthy. I have not exercised let alone even moved out of my cubicle or off of the couch rather that to perform necessary tasks of getting lunch, going grocery shopping ,or doing the laundry. I have not been mindful of what I was eating.
To become healthy is no small task. After a lifetime of glutton and greedily devouring fast food and sweets as much and as often as wanted it will be very difficult to change. To begin I have started taking vitamins, drinking water and having a bowl of cereal with fruit in the morning. I have made a promise to myself to not eat fast food at all for at least one month. After the month is over I will allow myself one fast food meal every 2 weeks but I will try not to go out of my way to get them.
I will be adding new goals on February first. Next month will probably be more focused on fitness and excercise. Hopefully now what I have announced it to the world or more like the world wide web, it will be a little bit easier to do.

These small lifestyle changes are just the first steps in what will be a long journey. To keep motivated I have been watching the Dr. OZ show on Fox as well as following many different programs about obesity on Discovery Health. I have been keeping track daily of what I am eating and will be weighin myself every monday.

Is it Important to You to be Healthy?

Of course, most people will say that they really want to be healthy, but what are you willing to DO to be healthy? And what are you willing to NOT DO to be healthy? In other words, what is more important to you than being healthy?

Is more important to:

• Eat fast food, or packaged, frozen and processed food, than take the time to cook healthy meals with fresh, organic healthy ingredients?

• Spend money on clothes and toys and other “stuff” than on fresh, organic, healthy food?

• Go along with what others say about what creates health rather than take the time to do your own learning?

• Sleep in, watch TV, play video games, gamble, work, stay on the phone, constantly text, or do other addictive activities rather than get exercise?

• Take drugs for anxiety, depression or insomnia rather than learn how to take responsibility for your feelings?

• Turn to substance addictions rather than take responsibility for your feelings? Continue to act out addictively with alcohol, cigarettes, sugar, caffeine, or drugs rather than learn to take loving care of yourself?

• Neglect your spiritual practice rather than take the time to create inner peace?

• Be “one of the gang” and eat like everyone else is eating, drink like everyone else, or take drugs like everyone else, rather than support your own health?

How are you rationalizing your unhealthy choices?

• I don’t have the time.

• I don’t believe that food has much to do with health.

• So and so smoked his whole life and never got lung cancer.

• Why bother? My genes are against me.

• I’ll get around to it when I have some time.

• Food is the only reward I have. I’m not giving up sweets and other so called “junk food”.

• I’m still young. I don’t have to worry about it for years.

• I have too much pain in my life, and I won’t be able to handle it if I get off drugs or give up my addictions.

• What’s the point in living if I can’t do what I want?

• I won’t have any friends if I don’t do what they do.

The question to ask yourself is: “How do I want to live my later years? Do I want to be vital, clear-headed and energetic as long as I live, or do I want to be suffering with cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases?”

While there are many factors that influence our health, such as genetics, the environment, accidents, and trauma from childhood, we each have much power to create health when it is important to us.

If health is very important to you, then I encourage you to start to take responsibility for yourself in three major areas:

• Food
• Exercise
• State of mind

All three are equally important and affect each other. If you are judging yourself and ignoring your own feelings, then your self-abandonment will be creating stress in your body. When we go into stress, the body goes into fight or flight, which means that the blood leaves the brain and organs and goes into the arms and legs for fighting or fleeing. When this happens often, the immune system is compromised, leaving you open for illness. In addition, the stress may lead you to act out addictive in an effort to relieve it, further fostering poor health. Exercise not only helps your state of mind, it helps your body function well. Poor food affects your state of mind and your energy, making it more difficult to exercise and create inner peace.

Today, ask yourself, “How important is my health to me?” Then be honest with yourself. If you are not willing to take loving care of yourself in all three areas, then you need to accept that your health is not that important to you.

They will teach you the correct form to use when exercising or playing your sport.

2.Do the Exercise Audit With Your Food

Another great thing to do to encourage yourself to exercise is to equate everything you eat in excess to the amount of time it would take to burn off the calories in it.  Research the calorie count of your pleasure foods, like sweets, and then find out how many calories you burn every thirty minutes of exercise. How many hours will you have to exercise to burn off that extra piece of chocolate cake?

This should make you think twice about over eating, and it should also encourage you to exercise because you know what you ate and what you need to do to burn it off.

3.Enlist an Exercise Friend

Exercising with a friend always makes the experience more bearable.  Having someone to chat with or compete against makes the time fly by.  Later, you two can compare how toned your muscles have gotten.  Mutual praise is a great reward a well.

Also, schedule your workouts. Do not leave them to the mercy of doing it when you feel like it, because you may not ever particularly feel like it.  Writing them in ink on a schedule makes you feel obligated.  It will become habitual, and will get done with the rest of your responsibilities.

These few tips on making exercise more bearable for weight loss can make the difference between your efforts being successful, and it becoming simply another forgotten New Year’s Resolution.  Make exercising fun, learn how what you eat affects your exercise goals, and make it a group event.  You will be sure to reach your goals then.
